What is a wind mitigation discount?

The State of Florida requires insurance companies to give discounts on the windstorm portion of your homeowner’s insurance for hurricane-resistant construction features of your home. The discounts are called Wind Mitigation Credits and are deducted from your policy premium after an inspector certifies and photo-documents their existence.
It is not a pass/fail inspection, and the result of the inspection usually—but not always—reduces the cost of your insurance; and the report cannot cause your insurance to be declined or the cost to go up.
You can't do the inspection yourself. It must be done by a Florida-licensed contractor, home inspector, architect, or engineer.
