How can I tell the age of an Amana air conditioner or heat pump from the serial number?

Amana is a nameplate of the Goodman Company. The first two numbers of the Amana serial number are the year of manufacture, and older data plates look like the one shown below, which indicates 2002. Newer Amana data plates are identical to a Goodman data plate and may even have the “Goodman Company” name at the top, but use the same system of first two numbers for year of manufacture.
