Do all chimneys require a cricket?

The building code only requires a cricket (also called a saddle) on the high side of any chimney that is more than 30-inches wide as measured perpendicular to the slope of the roof. But it is good building practice to install one for even smaller chimneys, to avoid water puddling at the base behind the chimney, which will eventually cause a leak.
