What is a TX valve or TXV for an air conditioner or heat pump system?
Monday, August 13, 2018
Both are abbreviations for a Themal Expansion Valve, which controls the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator coils of the interior unit (air handler) of your heat pump or air conditioning system. You are more likely to see a note scrawled on the font of the unit (like in the photo above) indicating that it was replaced, or an item on your repair bill for it, than ever actually see one. It uses a temperature sensing bulb to adjust the flow of refrigerant and keep pressure low to allow best level of expansion of the compressed liquid back in a gas. Also see Why is the air conditioning temperature split (delta T) fluctuating up and down while the system is running?
