They are magnets produced by GMX International, of Chino, California, that act as a “magnetic fluid conditioner for hard water,” and marketed by the company as an alternative to installing a regular water softener system. The reviews by homeowners on the company website are glowing. But most reviewers on independent websites call the product useless and a regrettable waste of their money.
You can decide for yourself whether the $600 to $800 price tag for a whole-house magnetic water treatment system is worth it. “I don’t think they do what they are supposed to,” according to our plumber friend, James Freeman, of J.W. Freeman Plumbing. “But I also don’t think they cause any harm.”
