How many electrical receptacles (outlets) are required in a hallway?

Thursday, July 12, 2018

The International Residential Code (IRC E3901.10) only requires an electric receptacle in a hallway that is 10 feet or longer, and only one is required. Longer halls do not require any additional receptacles. That does not mean that you can’t put a receptacle in a hallway shorter than 10 feet, or put multiple receptacles in a very long hallway. It’s just not required. The spacing requirement for many other rooms in a home (not more than 6 feet from any point along the base of a wall to a receptacle) does not apply to hallways. Also, see our article What is the minimum width of a hallway?

There are different standards for bathrooms, closets, hallways, foyers, kitchen, stairs and stair landings, garage, or outdoor receptacles. See our blog posts How far apart should the electrical receptacles be placed? and How far apart should electric receptacles be spaced in a bathroom? and What is the code requirement for receptacle outlets in a closet? and How many electrical receptacle outlets are required in a hallway?  and How far apart should kitchen counter receptacles be spaced? and How far apart should electric receptacle outlets be placed in a garage? and What is the building code requirement for receptacle outlets at stairs and stair landings? and What is the code requirement for receptacle outlets in a foyer? and Is a house required to have outdoor electric receptacle outlets?
