Is a landing always required at the top and bottom of stairs?
Friday, June 15, 2018
Yes, a landing is required at the top and bottom of stairs that is at least the width of the stairs and minimum of three feet deep, with two exceptions:
- A landing is not required at the top of an interior flight of stairs, including stairs in an enclosed garage, provided the door does not swing over the stairs. (FBC R311.7.6)
- A landing is not required where a stairway of two or fewer risers (one tread) is located on the exterior side of an exterior door. (FBC R311.3.2)
These citations are from the Residential Edition of the Florida Building Code (FBC), but are also in the International Residential Code (IRC).
